Welcome to the world of Tag Heuer. Today, we're discussing the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 Automatic Chronograph. You can see this 39mm stainless steel historical tribute and the entire Tag Heuer model line on our website, govbergwatches.com. The best way to attack a legend is to start from the outside and work your way in.
This model is the very image of the 1969 original as worn by Steve McQueen in the movie, Le Mans. Now, that watch was a pioneering square-shaped automatic chronograph, the first ever, and this modern tribute recalls all of the essential features of the original, albeit with modern luxury watch fit, finish, materials, and polish.
You can see the throwback Heuer logo atop the deployant clasp. It's a twin trigger action, such that you must release both triggers in order to open the clasp. The trigger action ensures that this when is in friction fit it can't simply pop open. The watch features high polish inside and out, immaculately finished. There is no unfinished surface within this clasp. It also features a clever minder system, such that excess is tucked underneath the clasp when buckled, so that the watch doesn't have minder loops on its strap, uncluttered with a clean aesthetic.
The perforated calfskin leather strap recalls its vintage predecessors as well as the steering wheels and perforated leather of vintage sports racing cars. Now, you can see on the underside a more traditional calfskin pattern, the perforation allowing the heat, grit, moisture, or sweat of the wrist to escape on hot days and during periods of activity.
Now, you can see the watch features the classic matte blue 1969 Steve McQueen-associated dial. The watch features elements that recall that original, albeit with modern Super-Luminova, such that the watch is luminescent and easy to read in low light and no light conditions. The tritone of the original, blue, red, and silver, is beautifully preserved with a set of rectangular corresponding, one might even say aesthetically complementary, sub-registers for constant seconds at 3 o'clock and a minute counter at 9 o'clock.
As with the Calibre 11 powered original, the winding and setting crown is placed on the 9 o'clock side of the case. True to its heritage, the watch is the image of the original, albeit with modern refinements, including a sapphire display casebacks that you can see the modern Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement as well as a sapphire crystal across the dial. Effectively scratch-proof, it can only routinely be scratched by diamond.
The watch features a 42-hour power reserve, thanks to the modern Calibre 11, and a smooth vertical clutch engagement to the chronograph. Now, the watch also features refinements, such as a 4-hertz modern beat rate superior to the original for chronometric precision as well as hacking second, such that when you pull the crown you stop the balance allowing precise synchronization to a known accurate reference time.
With respect to the date at 6 o'clock, there is also a quick-set mechanism, such that the movement allows you to rapidly cycle should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month. Finally, although the Monaco historically was one of the first water resistant square watches of all time, this one surpasses the original by far with 100 meter water resistance. Should you put the watch on a textile strap, this watch is suitable for swimming and shallow snorkeling.
