What is cd rot and how to prevent it?

30 years after we saw the first compact discs we know that there is a limit to the lifetime of music cd's, cdroms and dvd's

When I talk to people, and even collectors, when I talk about cdrot, many of them dont know what it is.
scratches are forgiving, cdrot means instant death of your disc.
For scratches to have to apply violence, for cd rot, you dont have to do anything

just put them on a shelf and they are and time, oxigen and moist will do it for you
Especially mega cd and saturn games are prone to fall victim.


What is cdrot?
2 layers of transparent plastic, with metal/aluminum layer.
2 layers glued together, making a vacuum so the metal is fine.
When the glue is still good, you are solid. But the glue looses strength over time.
Oxygen and moist will reach the metal player and will rust.
The laser in your disc reader needs the reflection of that metal layer

How to check for CD rot?
against the light

How to prevent CD rot?
Store in a dark environment/(sun)light cant dry out the glue
protect them against moist
protect temperature fluctuations, fluctuations cause strain on the glue of the disc
summer solid, winter heating that will heat up your room every day
protect them against oxygen

What i do:
-gripbags
-store in box to protect agains bumping and oxigen/moist
-store them in a dark place
-store them in a place with next to no temperature changes
