If you've seen the John Wick movies, you'll know there is a special hotel that he frequents where his type are protected from the outside world, and that's kind of like what the hotel in this video was like. It was run and influenced by people that helped protect many of its criminal inhabitants from the long arm of the law.
But that's only one dynamic of this place. While a good amount of the history of the Read Hotel (demolished in 1967) is unknown, especially in its later years, it was also a home to transients and even a few killers. It was also a place where destitute women would stay... and sometimes never leave safely. In this video I primarily cover the sketchy Read hotel during its heyday of crime during the 1920s and 1930s, but dip my toes into the 1940s with a particularly tragic crime.
