On November 27, 2023, in Franklin County, Florida, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) conducted a nighttime patrol in Tate's Hell Wildlife Management Area. The officer, operating a marked patrol vehicle with lights off, observed a truck using a bright spotlight in a way that could reveal the presence of wildlife, which is a regulated activity. Body cam footage recorded the events.
When the officer attempted to initiate a stop for a resource inspection, the vehicle fled at high speed, leading to a pursuit through the forest area. The truck eventually lost control and ended up disabled in a deep roadside ditch. Throughout the pursuit, the vehicle ran stop signs, exceeded posted speed limits, and drove in a reckless manner — all captured on body cam.
Once the vehicle was no longer operational, the officer made contact with the occupants. Two individuals were safely detained, as documented on body cam. Following a rights warning, the driver admitted to using the spotlight to look for deer and stated they fled due to not having a valid license.
The passenger told the officer they had asked the driver to stop multiple times. The vehicle was later confirmed to belong to a third party, who advised that the driver did not have permission to operate it. Based on the statements and behavior observed — all backed by body cam footage — the officer concluded the individuals were engaged in a prohibited wildlife activity and that the driver had attempted to evade inspection.
The driver was taken to the Franklin County Jail and may face charges related to fleeing, reckless driving, and interference with a resource inspection.
