The word retail comes from the Old French verb tailler, meaning "to cut off, clip, pare, divide in terms of tailoring" retailler meaning "a piece cut off, shred.
Retail is the selling goods or services directly to consumers for their personal use. It involves the sale of products or services from a business to an individual consumer, rather than selling in bulk to another business or intermediary. Retailers are the final link in the supply chain from producers to consumers.

Retail management refers to the process of overseeing the operations and activities of a retail business to ensure its smooth functioning and profitability. It encompasses a wide range of tasks aimed at effectively managing various aspects of a retail establishment, from inventory and sales to customer service and staff management.

Franchising in retail management typically involves a well-established brand or concept granting licenses to independent operators to open and operate retail locations under the franchisor's brand name and business model.
