Government's plans to increase nuclear generation capacity has temporarily been put on hold.
Minister of Energy and Electricity Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced the withdrawal of the gazetted Section 34 process aimed at facilitating the procurement of nuclear energy.
Earlier this year, he announced plans to procure 2,500 Mega Watts of nuclear power.
The decision to halt the process is to allow government to consult broadly, while ensuring that the nuclear strategy can also withstand public scrutiny.
Government's programme to invest in nuclear has long been opposed by various civil society organisations and the Democratic Alliance, citing high costs and the lack of public consultations.
