Marian College, a girls school in Sunshine West would like to have the opportunity to plant the wattle seeds, both the Earth based ones and space exposed ones. We here at Marian College hypothesise that the seeds exposed to space may be affected by the solar radiation that the sun emits, which may result in germination rate being slowed down. We think that tumours may be a result, or that the seeds may. However from further research into seeds, we have learnt that genetic redundancy is common in flowering plants, meaning they have multiple copies of important genes. Also, the seed coats contain flavonoids that protect the seeds from damage from ultraviolet light. These traits may help protect the seeds from damage. These are ideas that we bring to the table. Through this program, we would like to see the effects of space and zero g’s on seeds, with a first hand experience. This opportunity will be very insightful and a prestigious chance to observe and understand the scientific method. Through this program, the girls at our school would be encouraged and exposed to STEM in everyday life.
