Yesterday I visited the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, the second holiest site in Judaism. The story of the site begins with Abraham’s purchase of the cave as a burial place for his wife Sarah. According to Jewish tradition, Abraham insisted on a full legal purchase, and Jewish law later identified this place as the entrance to the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve are believed to be buried.

The Cave of the Patriarchs, known in Hebrew as Me’arat HaMachpelah and in Arabic as Al Haram Al Ibrahimi, is a unique sacred site shared by the three monotheistic religions. In addition to its central importance to Judaism, it is also holy to Christianity. During the Byzantine period a church was built here, followed by a Crusader church, reflecting Christian reverence for the biblical patriarchs and matriarchs.

Islam later embraced these same figures as prophets and incorporated the site into Islamic tradition. From the early Muslim period until 1967, Jews were forbidden to enter the complex. For centuries, Jewish worship was limited to prayer outside the structure at a place known as the Seventh Step, the closest point they were permitted to reach.

The site contains the traditional burial places of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Leah. These patriarchs and matriarchs form the foundation of biblical history and are central figures in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Architecturally, the structure above the caves is extraordinary. It was built by King Herod the Great in the first century BCE, using massive stone blocks similar to those of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. This is the only Herodian structure to survive almost completely intact for more than two thousand years.

Following the tragic massacre carried out by Baruch Goldstein in 1994, the complex was divided into separate Jewish and Muslim prayer areas. Today, the Cave of the Patriarchs stands as a powerful and complex symbol of faith, history, and continuity.
