In this interview with Natalia Makarova, Antony Tudor rather startling declared “The ballerina is perfect”.

He went on to elaborate “She has to be able to do ‘Swan Lake’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Giselle’ perfectly. Then she can be a ballerina”. The choreographer gave Olga Spessivtseva as an example of a dancer worthy of the title ‘ballerina’.

Makarova seems a bit non-plussed to say the least by this remark t

Tudor: “The ballerina is perfect”

Makarova: “There is nobody perfect”

Tudor: “The ballerina has to be perfect”

Makarova: “Has to be perfect!”

I suspect she feels Tudor does not consider there to be any ‘ballerinas’ in the modern era, including herself. And the look on the choreographer’s face seems to confirm this is what he meant - he looks like a snake about to pounce on its prey!
