This video is one of thirteen of the third subseries World Banknotes and we’re heading to South America to visit Guyana. I’ve collected international banknotes that represent the equivalent exchange rate to the U.S. dollar, or the lowest paper currency denomination that each country issues.
Hi, I’m Dan and welcome to Polar Currency and video number 19 - World Banknotes, Bite Size Edition number 3. I’m changing things up for the third video of the subseries World Banknotes series as we take a look at Guyana. I’m uploading one video for each South American country for 13 consecutive days so that explains why I’m calling these bite size editions. My collection is of contemporary international banknotes that have the equivalent exchange rate to the U.S. dollar or the lowest paper currency denomination that a country may issue.
The Co-operative Republic of Guyana is located southeast of Venezuela on the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is an indigenous word which means "Land of Many Waters". The Guyanese dollar has been the currency since 1839. Guyana gained its independence from Great Britain in 1966 and formed a republic in 1970 and remains a member of the United Kingdom’s Common Wealth.
The front of the 2018, 100 dollar note has a water mark window on the far left depicting a red macaw. The center has the engraving of the coat of arms followed by a map of Guyana. An interwoven, holographic, security thread runs vertically just off center right.
The reverse pictures the St. George's Cathedral an Anglican cathedral in the capital of Guyana, Georgetown, and opened in 1892. The building reaches 143 feet and is considered the tallest wooden cathedral in the world. The paper note has a UV security strip that displays the text Guyana.
That’s all I have for Guyana, and video number 19.
