The shortest distance of a point from a plane is said to be along the line perpendicular to the plane which is along the normal vector to the plane. We first find the coordinates of a random point from the plane and then use the dot product to work out a general formula to calculate the distance of any point from a given plane. With this formula if you are given the coordinates of a point and you are also give the equation of the plane, then you can calculate the shortest distance which is the perpendicular distance.
