Access to the project root folder is the key to a lot of things. And, if you don’t know by now, I’m telling you, that the startup.cs file is a significant file to make this happen. It determines how the files get served to the application. This is a very deep topic and fortunately, for me, it is out of the scope of this course.

But I will show you how to serve up files that you normally couldn’t get to, and how to switch out index.html files depending on what mode you are in, Debug mode or Release mode. And I will show you how to implement this without using MVC.

Any ideas why we need 2 different index.html files?,,, We will come back to that in a minute.

So what’s going on in the startup.cs file?

Basically, in this code we are saying “anytime we reference this folder, the “project root folder”, drop-back into the project root to locate the files”. And notice that this only happens in Debug mode.
