Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa said on Sunday that the newly brokered ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) represents a “significant opportunity” for lasting security and stability in Syria. The agreement, mediated by US envoy Tom Barrack, aims to prevent further bloodshed, facilitate civilian protection, and unify Syria against ISIS and other destabilising groups. The ceasefire builds on previous accords and has received backing from international leaders including Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron. SDF commander Mazloum Abdi confirmed the deal was intended to de-escalate hostilities, with plans to withdraw forces from Raqqa and Deir El-Zour to Hasakah.
