A little extra step when I’m shopping online adds up to thousands of extra points.
That little trick up my sleeve is placing online orders through shopping portals that earn me points on top of the points I get by putting an expense on my credit card. What are my favorite shopping portals? Rakuten, Southwest, American Airlines, Capital One, and Shop Through Chase. Rakuten, American Airlines, and Southwest all have browser extensions which makes it super easy to click to activate. Whereas Capital One and Shop Through Chase require you to log in and click through their site to get to the store’s website.
I got my first American Express card, which is a fee-free Business Blue Plus card in December. Since this card earns just a 15,000 point signup bonus, I was super excited to learn that you can transfer Rakuten cashback straight to any Amex card as points. Out of all the shopping portals, Rakuten consistently provides the highest average payout per dollar spent. With Walmart I regularly earn 3 points per dollar spent, whereas using the Southwest or American Express portals earns me just ½ or 1 point with a Walmart order. Just in the past 3 months, I have earned 13,000 Amex points!
Every couple of weeks or so, log into your Southwest shopping portal to see if they have any promotions going on, which they regularly do every couple of months. The most recent one was earning 3,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on your Southwest personal credit card between February and March. ​Or the Back to School one in August where I earned 2,000 points just by spending $500 over a 6-week period. It seriously is the easiest points ever to accrue with the purchases you’re already making anyways.
What else do you need to know? Rakuten gives a nice 3,000 point (or $30 cash) payout for referrals. So refer your spouse and friends to it to get a nice chunk of points.
While the Shop Through Chase portal requires you to pay for your online order with a points-earning Chase card (like your Chase Sapphire Preferred, Freedom, or Ink card), everyone else allows you to pay with any card of choice.
Know that if you want American Airlines miles, a lot of travel hackers prefer using their portal as a default as their points are harder to earn without having any transfer partners. So I personally just choose whichever portal I currently want to stockpile points with.
Download a few of these browser extensions today to start accruing so many more points than you would have before. It’s sooo easy and rewarding getting bonus points in addition to the credit card points for online orders I was going to place anyway.
