Описание к видео Jaishankar's RETORT on Trump's Plan to Deport 18,000 Indians

"I've seen some numbers; I caution you about them because for us a number is operative when we can actually validate the fact that the individual concerned is of Indian origin."

Responding to questions during a press conference at the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. last week, EAM S. Jaishankar addressed reports of the Indian Government agreeing to repatriate over 18,000 Indians illegally staying in the US.

“As a government, we are obviously very much supportive of legal mobility because we do believe in a global workplace. We want Indian talent and Indian skills to have the maximum opportunity at the global level. At the same time, we are also very firmly opposed to illegal mobility and illegal migration,” Jaishankar said.

The EAM further noted that New Delhi is still in the process of verifying those from the US who can be deported to India and the number of such individuals cannot be determined yet.

The press conference followed a bilateral meeting Jaishankar had with his new American counterpart, Marco Rubio, on the previous day. They discussed a wide range of topics, including regional issues and opportunities to further deepen the US-India relationship, in particular on critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and on advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

However, the State Department readout noted that Rubio also brought up the issue of "irregular migration" during the meeting. The journalist questioning Jaishankar wondered aloud whether this might be a reference to Indians illegally migrating to the US from Indian states like Punjab, Gujarat, and Haryana, among others.

Acknowleding that New Delhi was ready to assist in this regard, the EAM countered by citing the cumbersome process for legal migration. “At the same time, I also told him that, while we understand all of this... it is in our mutual interest to facilitate legal and mutually beneficial mobility. If it takes 400-odd days of waiting period to get a visa, I don’t think the relationship is well served by this. He (Rubio) also noted that point.”
