The Middle East kingdom of Jordan is bordered on the west by Israel and the Dead Sea, on the north by Syria, on the east by Iraq, and on the south by Saudi Arabia. It is comparable in size to Indiana. Arid hills and mountains make up most of the country. The southern section of the Jordan River flows through the country. Jordan is formally known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. A Kingdom ought to have a king and it does. His name is Abdullah II and is a member of the …… yes, the Hashemite family. Strangely enough, there is a river descending or flowing down called the “Jordan River” flowing from north to south serving as the border between Israel and Jordan and ending up in the Dead Sea. The country is tiny! It’s about 89,000 square kilometres (34.5 thousand square miles) which if it were a square would be less than 300 kilometres (186 miles) on a side. That’s just a three hour drive on a highway! Jordan became an independent state in 1946 and is part of what was formerly know as Trans Jordan. The capital of Jordan is Amman. The country is 93% Sunni Muslim, 6% Christian and 1% other. Arabic is dominant language. Snuck two facts about the country Jordan in here. The Dead Sea is actually a lake, located at the bottom (where else) of a rift valley system where the earth’s crust has pulled apart. Jordan produces a little bit of natural gas in the east near Iraq which is used to generate electricity. It used to import gas from Egypt but now it comes from Israel. We don’t normally think of Israel as a gas producer but it is. Jordan is home to more than 100,000 archaeological, religious and tourist sights. Like Petra, Dead Sea, Wadi Rum and Jerash, only to name a few. Jordan is rich in history and culture, it is a great holiday destination to enjoy your time and educate yourself on Middle Eastern heritage. Jordan’s majestic Mount Nebo reaches a height of more than 800 feet, overlooking the town known as the Holy Land. It has become a popular pilgrimage destination, hikers can enjoy a stunning panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and the cities of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Amman is one of the oldest cities to ever exist, it’s no surprise it shelters the oldest statues in the world. The Ain Ghazal Statues date back to 7500 BC, they can be found at The Jordan Museum.Native language is Arabic, however many citizens speak English.
