Today’s video, we're diving into the history of the Habsburg-class battleships, a group of pre-dreadnought battleships built by Austria-Hungary at the turn of the 20th century. The Habsburg-class battleships were the first sea-going battleships built by Austria-Hungary since the central battery ship Tegetthoff in 1876.

The names selected for these ships were significant for the point the admiralty wanted to convey. Since the Hungarian side of the empire was reluctant to fund the Navy, naming warships after notable Hungarian historical figures helped persuade Budapest to provide the necessary funding.

This class was composed of three ships:
SMS Habsburg, completed in 1902 which was named after the Austro-Hungarian Royal family,
SMS Árpád, completed in 1903, was named after the first head of the confederation of the Hungarian tribes who led the Hungarians to the Carpathians basin in the end of the 9th century
SMS Babenberg completed in 1904 which was named after The House of Babenberg, a dynasty governed the Austria from 976 until 1246, then the House of Habsburg succeeded them.
These three ships were in service all the way till the end of the first World War and taken part in the bombardment of Ancona.
