Audi 100 / 200 / 5000 / S4 / A6 (C3 and C4) – A car of many names that saved Audi

Today, I’m going to tell you the story of a car that had many names and brought Audi to the top league of luxurious executive cars – Audi 100.
It was produced in 4 generations from 1968 to 1994, and the direct successors of this car are produced until this day under the names Audi A6 and Audi A8.
On this channel, we speak about cars of the Eighties and Nineties, so I’m going to talk more about the third (C3) and the fourth (C4) generations, but we’ll take a look at the first two generations as well, to understand where it all came from.
Audi 100 has a very interesting story of its creation, and we can say that Audi 100 probably saved the Audi engineering team and the “Audi” brand from extinction. And later, it allowed Audi to stake out a claim for a place at the table of German luxury executive cars occupied by only Mercedes Benz and BMW before.
The driving experience could be very different depending on what engine and powertrain you had.
The car was spacious, comfortable, solid-built, and pleasant to drive in all trim levels. But with weak carbureted 4-cylinder engines it was really slow and boring. On the opposite side, with 5 or 6-cylinder engines, especially with Quattro all-wheel drive, Audi 100 was a very fast and enjoyable car and even a unique car for its time.
