There are four main parts of Medicare: A, B, C, and D.
Medicare Part A is hospital insurance and is usually free for most people, but it does not cover long-term or custodial care. It has a deductible of $1,600 for each 60-day benefit period in 2023.
Medicare Part B covers doctor's visits, diagnostic testing, and other medical services. It has a premium cost of $164.90 in 2023 and a deductible of $226, after which Medicare covers 80% of the costs.
Most people are eligible for Medicare when they turn 65, with a seven-month initial enrollment period. Disability may qualify some individuals for enrollment prior to turning 65.
Medicare Part C refers to Medicare Advantage plans offered by private insurance companies. They often have a network of doctors and providers and may include additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. Some plans have a zero premium.
Medicare Part D is the prescription drug plan, which can be purchased separately. It covers prescription medications and is provided by private insurance companies. Late enrollment in Part D may result in a penalty, and Medicare supplement plans can help with co-insurance and deductibles.
