Happy Birthday to Geddy Lee who was born on this day in 1953.
YYZ, by Rush, off of their album, Moving Pictures, which came out in 1981.
I got into Rush within my first few years of picking up the bass, nearly 40 years ago, and I’ve been with them (and Geddy) ever since. It was a great ride and I consider the countless hours I’ve spent scrutinizing his bass lines over those many years to have been an incredible gift.
I wanted to do something a little different for my “re-do” of this song. My friend, Hayley, put together a bass-less backing track from the individual isolated tracks I had laying around. That is what I am playing along with. My friend, Roland, mixed my bass and synced my track with the video. I recorded my bass as a separate track instead of going directly to the camera as I usually do. My intention was for this track to be a bit more "produced" than my videos normally are. The original track was much more EQ’d and even doubled in some parts (like on the album). It sat better in the mix and sounded pretty fat and slick, but I really wasn’t comfortable hearing myself that way. To me, it didn’t sound like me. So, at my request, Roland went back and mixed my bass in the track pretty much how I gave it to him. I asked him, “Could you just make it sound like one of my videos?” Which, as painful as it must have been for him to do, he did. I learned this song off the album back when it came out, before the concert videos and well before YouTube or anything like that and I’m still unearthing little doodads here and there. I play the first bass solo the way I learned it back then, which is not the way Geddy plays it, but it has served me well and I’m sticking with it. Same goes for the riff that follows the last big drum fill in the song. I’m still playing the part I cobbed together way back then…I just tried to get a few of the “money notes” in there and to follow the rhythm.
Once again, big thanks to Hayley and Roland, just two of the people who make my life easier -

And now, a word from our sponsor - As much as it pains me to use my channel to promote something of a personal nature, I’m going to do just that.
I’m going to be hanging out in the Zero-Mod booth at the “Guitar and Bass Expo” in Wyomissing, PA on Saturday, August 19th.
I’ll be playing along live to some of my favorite songs, on some of my favorite, Zero-Mod equipped, basses. It’ll be just like my channel - except with the potential for mistakes! And the potential will be great!
Admission is free and, I understand, they are running shuttle busses from NYC and Philadelphia to the show.
