Washington Wanderers – Kalaloch Wanderings

Join us as we visit Kalaloch and The Tree of Life in this edition of Washington Wanders!

Kalaloch is a resort area entirely within Olympic National Park in western Washington. Cabins are on a 50-foot bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean north of the reservation of the Quinault Indian Nation. The name Kalaloch /ˈkleɪlɒk/ comes from the Quinault term k'–E–le–ok, pronounced Kq–â-lā'–ȯk, meaning "canoe launch and landing". The site was one of the few safe landing sites for dugout canoes between the Quinault River and Hoh River.

Located just north of Kalaloch Lodge, near the Kalaloch Campground you will find The Tree of Life. A large Spruce with its viewable roots still supplying the tree with life despite having no soil.

Highlights include Lake Quinault Lodge & Merriman Falls.

Beach Berry Bro Salad

Dressing
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon golden balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon roughly chopped fresh tarragon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Salad
3 cups cooked chicken
4 cups loosely packed fresh spinach
6-8 large strawberries , hulled and quartered
1 avocado , peeled, seeded and cut into chunks
3-4 thinly sliced rings of red onion
1/4 cup feta cheese
2 tablespoons sliced almonds (or other nuts)

Instructions
Whisk the extra virgin olive oil with the balsamic vinegar, sugar, tarragon, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper in a small bowl until blended.
Place the chicken in a shallow bowl and cover with half of the dressing, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. Arrange spinach, strawberries, and sliced onion in a bowl (or individual bowls). Lightly toss with the remaining dressing. Add the chicken and avocado, top with feta cheese and nuts.
