In this video, Ronnie and B from Hillbilly Garage1215 tear down a small block Chevy Vortec engine that was claimed to be “running when pulled.” It doesn’t take long to find problems.

They uncover a busted rocker arm, pushrods out of place, and multiple factory press-in rocker studs pulled from the heads — already casting doubt on the engine’s backstory. As the teardown continues, more issues appear, including loose head bolts, two badly burnt valves, excessive RTV on the oil pan, glued-on seals, and a timing chain with noticeable slack.

Not everything is bad news though — the lifter valley is clean, the lifters come out easily, and the cylinder walls still show good crosshatching with no ring ridge.

Along the way, Ronnie and B share practical shop tips and explain what went wrong and why. This engine is headed for deeper cleaning, repairs, and upgrades as they work toward turning it into one of those “pretty ones” that roll out of the shop.
