When someone comes in for a diabetic eye exam, the most important thing we do is check their vision and then dilate their eyes. Dilating the eyes gives us a clear view of the retina, where diabetic retinopathy occurs. In addition to examining the eyes with our microscopes and specialized lenses, we also utilize the latest imaging technology. This technology provides us with a wide-field view of all the different parts of the back of the eye, allowing us to study it in detail and ensure we detect any changes associated with diabetes at an early stage. There have been excellent studies showing that when we use this wide-field imaging, our chances of detecting diabetic retinopathy earlier are significantly increased.
