The depth of snare drums is always a hot-button topic when figuring out a particular sound.

Yet the reason why we pick a particular depth is sometimes very off or misinformed.

For example, most people love getting a 6.5” depth because they believe they will get a Phatter sound.

I would argue that you don’t get a beefier sound with a deeper snare but the ease of effort to achieve a thicker sound.

Because of the depth, the air has a farther distance to travel through the shell, which allows air not to get thrown back as quickly as it would on a more shallow drum.

This sound is possible in a shallower drum, but you do have to do some tuning magic and potentially a head change to focus the tone. (PS: as you can hear in this drum, the material also plays a role.)

In the end, it’s all about diving into things like depth to hopefully better understand the drums we have and seek out information that provides insight into intentionally buying drums that will benefit the goal of the sound we want to create.
