Hidden in the hills of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, beside the old London Tract Meeting House, lies one of the strangest legends in early American history: the Ticking Tomb. For more than two centuries, locals have claimed to hear a steady tick…tick…tick rising from a single grave.

The story begins in the mid-1760s when Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon—the English astronomers who surveyed the Mason–Dixon Line—camped near the meeting house. According to long-told local lore, a curious toddler wandered into Mason’s tent, swallowed his pocket chronometer, and was cursed to “tick forever.”

The boy grew into a clockmaker. And when he died, the ticking followed him into the earth.

Visitors still report hearing a faint, mechanical ticking rise from the grave. Some say it’s an underground spring. Others swear it’s the chronometer—still keeping time beneath the soil. I leaned in with my camera.
