Hong Kong and the surrounding region in Southern China is a hub of innovation and technological development in a wide range of areas including medicine and biological science as well as data and computational science. Across these areas, biostatistics is becoming an increasingly powerful discipline, able to leverage the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence to solve major problems in everything from public health to genetics, in the pursuit of a brand new concept: “Health Intelligence”.

The City University of Hong Kong’s Department of Biostatistics is at the heart of this movement. As part of the recently formed College of Computing, Biostatisticians work closely with colleagues in computer and data science to make major breakthroughs in the field. The concept of Health Intelligence is a vision for the future of patient care, leveraging statistical techniques to really improve decision making and outcomes in medicine and public health. Research projects within the department span a wide area.

One project focuses on developing an AI driven risk-based treatment scheme for chemotherapy in cancer care, bringing together multimodal and inconsistently produced data from different hospitals to allow doctors to build robust treatment plans. Similar work is also being doing with technology company PVMed, using datasets to make better predictions about how products will impact patients.

Another project seeks to better interpret biological data, in order to understand, for example, which genes cause certain conditions. Medical data is often very large, with lots of misleading correlation in the data without being able to determine causation - this work helps identify the actual causes of disease from vast datasets.

This work, and much is fostering a dynamic and stimulating research environment, attracting top level faculty and students from around the region, and the world. Training the next generation of talent in this rapidly changing discipline is key, and so CUHK offers both a Master of Science and PhD in Biostatistics - helping build expertise in the region, make further breakthroughs in the research, and make a difference to lives everywhere.
