The Mission is led by Chief Observer, Laura Ballarín Cereza, Member of the European Parliament, from Spain. In total, the EU EOM deployed 179 observers from 24 EU Member States, and from Canada, Norway and Switzerland across the country to assess the whole electoral process against international obligations and commitments for democratic elections, as well as the laws of Mozambique. A delegation of the European Parliament, headed by Antonio López Istúriz White, MEP (Spain), also joined the mission and fully endorsed the #EUEOM Preliminary Statement. On election day, the EU EOM observed in 729 polling stations. A Core Team of ten analysts arrived in Maputo on 1 September. The Core Team assessed all aspects and stages of the electoral process, including electoral, legal, political and media issues. They were supported by logistical and security experts. A group of 32 Long-Term Observers (LTOs) arrived in Mozambique on 9 September to cover all the provinces of the country. They observed the electoral process in their areas and reported to the Core Team in Maputo. Shortly before election day, they were joined by 74 Short-Term Observers (STOs). On election day, the mission was reinforced by observers from EU diplomatic missions accredited to Mozambique. The EOM observed voting, counting and the tabulation of results. A preliminary statement was delivered prior to the completion of the election process. The final assessment of the elections will include an evaluation of the conduct of the remaining stages of the election process, in particular, the tabulation of results, and the handling of possible post-election day complaints and appeals.
