Ruwanweli Seya is one of the most significant and sacred stupas in Sri Lanka, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. It is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site and is considered one of the "Solosmasthana" (sixteen sacred places) in Sri Lanka. The stupa was built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE after his victory over the Chola king Elara.
Key Features of Ruwanweli Seya:

Architecture: The stupa has a distinctive bell-shaped structure, a common design in ancient Sri Lankan stupas. It is one of the tallest ancient monuments, originally standing at 300 feet but now slightly reduced due to restorations.

Cultural Significance: Ruwanweli Seya is highly revered by Buddhists, as it is believed to enshrine sacred relics of the Buddha. The stupa is surrounded by a large courtyard, and it has four gateways, each leading to a smaller stupa.

Restoration: Over the centuries, the stupa underwent several restorations. The most recent major restoration was carried out in the 20th century under the patronage of the Anagarika Dharmapala movement.

Festivals: The site is a focal point during the Poson Festival, which celebrates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

Ruwanweli Seya remains a symbol of the Buddhist heritage and the cultural pride of Sri Lanka.
