Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage train video. In its third year in the running, the Puffing Billy Railway renewed the ever-popular Train of Lights for 2024. This year's season ran for a little over three weeks. The Train of Lights is a winter lights display, Australia's version of the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. The 12-carriage-long special begins their trip from Lakeside, travelling DOWN the line into the valleys of the Dandenong Ranges. Once again, narrow gauge Garratt locomotive NG129 was at the helm of these specials, taking on the rather lengthy train with ease. At Gembrook, passengers had a bit of time to get a warm beverage or a snack while the locomotive was serviced, then jumped back aboard for the trip back UP the line.
This year's video is a little different. Instead of every shot coming from one or two chases, the video is built on a single chase, with clips captured over multiple days throughout the three weeks. We begin the video with the transfer; all the transfer shots are from separate days. Then we follow the Train of Lights throughout its journey. We finish off with the light engine at Menzies Creek.

The Puffing Billy Railway is Victoria’s most famous tourist railway. Located in the Dandenong Ranges, the railway is 15.6 miles (25.1 km) long, operating with their original locomotives from over 100 years ago. They operated regularly throughout the year, and also hold special events like the tour seen in this video. This is the annual season of the "Train of Lights", adding a rather spectacular spectacle for the railways of Victoria.
