Debridement of wound is medical cleansing where the devitalized tissues like the biofilm, fibrinous exudate and the devitalized tissues are being removed so that the wound heals faster. Prior to wound debridement, the examination of the wound is being done and for proper code selection, the area of the wound debrided and the extent of wound debrided must be known. We have different codes for the depth of debridement -

Skin debridement codes are reported from the Medicine section of the CPT manual with codes 97597 and 97598 which represents a non-surgical debridement. Codes 11042 and 11045 are reported for subcutaneous debridement; 11043 and 11046 are for muscle debridement and 11044 and 11047 are for bone debridement.

The area of wound will be documented in square centimeters and sometimes, the wound measurement is given in the form of length x width x depth. In such case, we need to multiply the length and width obtaining the area in sq. cm units.
