They do not like an acid soil and they are better not exposed to strong winds or a very damp soil in winter.

ERYSIMUM 'Bowles's Mauve', the perennial wallflower, has beautiful shaped blue green coloured leaves and sweet scented purple flowers. 'Bowles's Mauve is easy to grow although it needs well draining soil and a warm protected spot. But we have to be realistic about its lifespan. Over the years it will get more woody and, apart from only one I have grown, none seem to set any new growth when cut back hard in to old wood. To help the plant as much as we can it should be planted in a well draining soil and away from exposure to cold winds and temperatures. Other than than that, I didn't find the aspect particular important and in the garden they grow as happily in full sun, in semi-shade and even in a fair amount of shade. They react badly to regular low temperatures or damp soils especially in autumn and winter. Pruning Erysimum is probably the main issue There is more information on pruning in this article. Wallflowers are annuals, herbaceous perennials or sub-shrubs. The perennial species are short-lived and in cultivation treated as biennials.
