Mount Goode - John Muir Wilderness (2024-September) : DoubleTap

Video of my ascent of Mount Goode (13,085ft) in the John Muir Wilderness.

Mount Goode is another great peak starting at the Bishop Pass / South Lake trailhead. The hike in is a beautiful one with numerous high Sierra lakes and peaks all around to look at. At ~11,270ft I left the Bishop Pass trail at the south end of Saddlerock Lake. After some pleasant navigation through some small hills I started the first ascent up some granite ramps and sandy slopes (with some vegetation) to a level spot at ~11,930ft where you can see the final approach to Mount Goode. It's a sand slog from here until ~12,350ft where it gets a little intense. The terrain becomes steep and super loose so it's a good idea to have a helmet just in case someone above sends rock and debris down towards you. The final few hundred ft involve Class 2-3 scrambling. There are many ways to go so maybe I just didn't find the Class 2 approach. This part of the climb (and descent) took the longest for me. On the way down from the summit I decided to stay on the ridgeline to the east to avoid loose terrain. I was not disappointed as the rock was very stable but it required multiple Class 3 moves that slowed me down considerably. After a LONG time I was finally back on a sandy descent that wasn't too full of big rocks and it was an easy descent from there.

Overall, a very fun peak with tremendous views the entire hike/climb. You get some incredible visual intel on Mount Agassiz. However, Agassiz looks impossible to climb from this angle. Fortunately, Agassiz is stable Class 2 the entire way up and down. Funny how visuals work in the mountains.
