APOL1-mediated kidney disease: A conversation with Alonzo Mourning and Dr. Gerald Appel | NKF

Many people know Alonzo Mourning as a basketball legend, but did you know that he was diagnosed with a rare genetic kidney disease (now known as a form of APOL1-mediated kidney disease, or AMKD) at the height of his career? Today, Alonzo is an active kidney health advocate and is helping educate and empower others who may be at risk of developing AMKD to be proactive about their kidney health. Join us during National Kidney Month for this special NKF Live, where we’ll sit down with Alonzo to discuss his journey with AMKD alongside his nephrologist, Dr. Gerald Appel.

Dr. Appel is a medical doctor and kidney researcher who has devoted his nephrology career of over 45 years to the care of patients with glomerular diseases. He is currently Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where he was co-Director of Clinical Nephrology for more than 25 years and where he currently runs Center for Glomerular Diseases. The National Kidney Foundation awarded Dr. Appel its lifetime achievement award in 2005, naming him "the foremost academic nephrologist of the past 25 years.” Dr. Appel received widespread recognition during the early 2000s for his role in securing a kidney transplant for Alonzo Mourning and for helping enable him to return to the court for an NBA championship.
