On September 30, 2024 at approximately 3:56 PM, Officer Breauna Carpenter with the Pullman Police Department responded to the Walmart located at 1690 SE Harvest Drive for a reported shoplifting. She walked into the loss prevention office and made contact with the shoplifting suspect, who was identified as 21-year-old Hannah. The loss prevention employee, Zane D. Casper, told Officer Carpenter Hannah had allegedly stolen from the same Walmart on 2 prior occasions as well.
According to Zane, Hannah allegedly purchased some items at the self-checkout, but did not pay for the other items. When the self-checkout employee was not looking, she allegedly obscured a bottle of Jergens tanning and firming lotion before placing it inside a bag of purchased items. Hannah also allegedly retrieved 2 items while only scanning 1 of them and placing the other scanned item in the bag as well. The other item was later determined to be a jar of pesto.
After Officer Carpenter read Hannah her Miranda rights, she admitted that she tried to steal the bottle of lotion, but claimed that the pesto jar was a mistake. The officer then asked Hannah if she had the money to pay for the items, and Hannah said that she did. Hannah also claimed that other students often stole from Walmart, but acknowledged that it was not an excuse for what she did.
Officer Carpenter placed Hannah under arrest for 3rd degree theft, and escorted her to the patrol car after placing her in handcuffs. The other items that she did pay for were transported along with her to the Pullman Police Department. While she was being transported, Officer Carpenter asked Hannah about the other 2 occasions where she allegedly stole from the same Walmart, and Hannah stated that those were likely produce items. At the Pullman Police Department, she called her roommate Casey to come to the station and retrieve the items she had paid for because some of them were perishable. Hannah was then instructed to remove her jewelry and placed in a holding cell.
Hannah was later fingerprinted and photographed by Officer Casper. After processing Hannah, he handed her a copy of her charges. She was charged with 3 counts of 3rd degree theft in violation of RCW 9A.56.050. Officer Casper returned her property, advised her of her charges, and released her pending her court appearance.
A subsequent review of the surveillance footage at Walmart indicated that Hannah had allegedly stolen from the same Walmart on August 26, 2024 and August 25, 2024. On August 25, 2024, Hannah allegedly stole bread, Annie’s White Cheddar Mac & Cheese, bettergoods gluten free breakfast sandwiches, and a paper bag. On August 26, 2024, Hannah allegedly stole an SToK brand cold coffee. The loss prevention employee’s report indicates that on August 26, 2024, he was watching live CCTV footage of the self-checkout registers when he saw that Hannah was underringing merchandise. Based on his live observation, he had the Front End Team Lead make sure that Hannah paid for her items correctly, including her avocados and bell peppers. However, she still left without paying for the coffee while returning to customer service counter to receive a $2.23 refund for 1 avocado. The loss prevention outlined these allegations in detail when Zane Casper submitted a signed statement to the Pullman Police Department.
