Today we’re going to talk about AAC Blocks – their feasibility, advantages, disadvantages, and how to repair small hairline cracks. We’ll also cover an important safety tip – Concrete Bands in construction. So, let’s begin!”

*AAC Blocks*

👷‍♂️: “AAC means Autoclaved Aerated Concrete – a lightweight block made from cement, lime, sand, fly ash, and a little aluminum powder. These blocks are steam-cured, making them porous and very light.


They are widely used in modern construction, especially in high-rise buildings and earthquake-prone zones.”

*Advantages*

👷‍♀️: “So what are the benefits?


They are 3–4 times lighter than normal bricks, reducing foundation load.

They provide great thermal insulation – meaning cooler summers, warmer winters.

They are fire-resistant and eco-friendly since fly ash is used.

And because of their larger size, construction is faster.”

*Aac blocks  predominantly used in framed structures

*AAC blocks in textured form require less chemical for strong bonds.when compared to mortar quantity.

*Disadvantages*

👷‍♂️: “But it’s not all perfect. AAC blocks have some drawbacks:


Higher initial cost compared to bricks.

They are brittle, so mishandling can cause chipping.

They absorb water, so you must plaster or protect them.

And in smaller towns, they’re not always easily available.”

Also it's strength is half compared to conventional bricks.

• While cutting AAC blocks one should cover their face with mask as dust occurs which is harmful to lungs.

*Hairline Crack Repair*

👷‍♀️: “Now, many people complain about hairline cracks in AAC walls. Don’t worry – here’s how to fix them:


1. First, clean the crack with a brush.

2. Apply a ready-made crack filler like Dr. Fixit Crack-X or Asian Paints SmartCare.

3. If the crack is deeper, use white cement with a waterproofing compound.

4. Cure lightly for 2–3 days if cement is used.

   And finally, repaint or replaster the surface. Simple!”

*Concrete Bands*

👷‍♂️: “The last but very important part – Concrete Bands.

In earthquake-prone areas, RCC bands are provided at four levels:


Plinth band (above foundation)

Lintel band (above doors & windows)

Roof band (at slab level)

Gable band (in pitched roof walls)


These are 75–150 mm thick RCC strips with steel reinforcement (usually 2 bars of 8–10 mm with stirrups). They tie the walls together, so the whole structure behaves as one unit during earthquakes. This reduces chances of collapse.”


Place it every 1200mm height with proper rods.
