Douglas was born in 1868 and learnt much of his brass band scoring skills from his teacher, J. Ord Hume. In 1902, when the world famous “The British Bandsman” newspaper became a weekly rather than a monthly publication, Douglas was asked to become its editor. It was during his tenure as editor that he was asked to arrange Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger” for the 1903 National Finals. However, it is his march writing prowess that the Sun Life Band shall present to you now. Mephistopheles has become a favourite at the annual Whit Friday March Contests.

Stanshawe, Stanshawe (Bristol), Sun Life Stanshawe, and Sun Life Band are the same band but at different times of their history.
The band was formed in 1968 and disbanded in 1997.
