African wild dogs are a globally Endangered species due to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, disease, and persecution. The Waterberg is one of the last places in South Africa where African wild dogs continue to occur outside of formally protected areas. In addition to African wild dogs, the Waterberg boasts a relatively intact natural population of large carnivores, including leopards, brown hyenas, spotted hyenas, and cheetahs.

The TOOG Area Pack ranges freely across 125,000Ha of privately-owned bushveld in the northern part of the Waterberg, South Africa. In July 2023, students and guests had the incredibly rare opportunity to witness the pack chasing away a brown hyena as part of the Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative (WWDI)'s 2023 eco-tourism project.

This video was captured by African wild dog researchers, Pia Riddell and Katie Malone, from the GAMELab at James Cook University, IBREAM, and the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria.
