The Book Thief is a 2013 war drama film co-produced by the United States and Germany, directed by Brian Percival and starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, and Sophie Nélisse. The film is adapted from the 2005 novel The Book Thief by Australian author Markus Zusak.

In 1939 Germany, 9-year-old Liesel and her younger brother are sent to a foster family on the outskirts of Munich. Tragically, her 6-year-old brother dies along the way. After his quiet burial, Liesel comes into possession of her first book, The Gravedigger’s Handbook.

This book becomes one of the 14 that would bring her boundless comfort. She is a lonely child; her father, labeled as a dissident, was taken away, and her mother disappeared soon after. With the help of her foster father, who plays the accordion, she learns to read. Despite a life filled with hardship, she finds something even more irresistible than food—books. Unable to resist, she begins secretly collecting them. Liesel, known as the “book thief,” struggles to survive in a troubled Germany and, incredibly, brings comfort to others around her who are also enduring hardship.
