Fr. Stephen Fernandes explains today Vatican II’s Declaration - Dignitatis Humanae, the Church’s Magna Carta on Religious Liberty. This short but major text of the Council affirms that the right to religious freedom is the basis for the recognition of the religious and cultural pluralism of a country and is the most profound expression of the freedom of conscience. Further, religious freedom which is founded on the dignity of the human person is inseparable from human rights. The freedom of individuals and of communities to profess and practise their religion is an essential element for peaceful human coexistence.
