While exploring the collections published in France in the last quarter of the 16th century, one often comes across compositions set to Italian lyrics. All these publications emerge in a favorable climate.

Already, wars and voyages at the beginning of the 16th century had paved the way for closer contacts between France and Italy. Subsequently, Platonism and Petrarchism had infiltrated the literature and philosophy.

In Boesset's "Dove ne vai, crudele", everything is of Italian inspiration – the recitative style at the beginning with the brief vocal embellishment that enhances the word, the melody whose expressive curves suggest variations in tempo in relation to the declamation of the text, harmonic progressions, and chromaticism that perfectly convey the feelings of anxious or desperate love.
