Описание к видео Shingleback Lizard walking through bushland leaf litter Victoria Australia 15 September 2025

The Shingleback Lizard [Tiliqua rugosa], is a blue-tongued skink endemic to Australia and is found in semiarid and arid regions across Southern Australia. The Shingleback Lizard has thick scales varying in colour from dark brown to cream and is well camouflaged in the fallen bark and leaf litter of the bushland ground storey.

The Shingleback Lizard eyes are small with a reddish-brown grey colour. The tongue is a bright blue inside a bright pink mouth. The short stumpy tail is similar in shape to its head. Average body length, snout on triangular head to vent, is 285 mm. Unlike many skinks, the Shingleback Lizard cannot shed their tails.

This Shingleback Lizard was filmed moving away from its original basking location after it had been warming up for some time in the morning sunshine.

The Shingleback Lizard show strong home range site stability for up to several years and often multiple lizards can utilise the same burrow. Shingleback Lizards form monogamous pair bonds and may live for up to 50 years. On average, individual Shingleback Lizards have a home range of approximately four hectares, and can move up to 500 metres per day.

The Shingleback lizard is an omnivorous reptile that eat snails, insects, carrion, vegetation and flowers. Since they are slow-moving, they tend to eat other slow moving species. They can easily crush through the shells of snails with their strong jaws.

The Shingleback Lizard is a cold blooded reptile and is often seen sun basking in cleared areas and on road ways where some are killed by vehicle traffic.

In the concurrent audio track the call of a Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata) can be heard.
