Members of NAKS Wan Rutu in a Koto; a cultural dress of the Afro-Suriname people.

During the quarantine period, April 2020, some members of NAKS Wan Rutu converted the well-known #dontrushchallenge into a Koto Prodo challenge. In seconds they flaunt in one of their most beautiful koto.. This shows their appreciation for this cultural heritage.

The Koto is a multi-layered dress and consists of several parts , basically a long skirt (koto), a short blouse (yaki) and an intricately folded headdress or headwrap (the angisa), which could be tied in various styles, with each an own meaning. These could convey the mood of its wearer or send a message. The clothing fabrics of the koto as well as the headkerchiefs were given names, mainly odo (proverbs).

NAKS Wan Rutu is a youth department of the Organisation NAKS. Their goal is to present and develop the traditional Afro-Surinamese dances. Follow them on Facebook: NAKS WAN RUTU
