How Blue Pilgrims changed Football in Ahmedabad | ICC 2019 After Movie

The Blue Pilgrims are India’s national team supporters group. The concept started with the need of creating an atmosphere and creating identity amongst the nation’s youth for the beautiful game. In an era when Indian football has been on constant decline - the shut down of 34 professional clubs in the last 10 years the gravest manifestation of it, football fans have been left delusional, uninterested and unwilling to invest time and money into local football.

Till today, cricket remains the biggest sport in India - in a country where football used to be number one - with its rich and glorious footballing history. Cricket tops (albeit at a massive gap), followed surprisingly by the love for European football - exemplified by scores of European supporters club that dot every Tier-1, Tier-2 and even Tier-3 cities in the country. This National team Ultras group focuses on changing perceptions about Indian football by creating bonds through 90 minutes of chanting , banner and mosaic choreographies and off the field community activities, to engage the local public.
The biggest challenge for the group is not to unite supporters of various clubs across the country but rather to convince the large percentage of the non-stadium trotting public that “local football and the national team needs their voices to grow” . Inquilab (revolution) e Indian Football, is a phrase they use frequently to inspire and motivate their countrymen.

Every year, the challenge for them is new - new cities, new frontiers, new- languages- in a country so huge and diverse. Traveling within the country is akin to traveling away- ridiculously long journeys from one end of the country to the other, yet, there’s always a few that go with the intention of changing the outlook of many. No task is too big they say, all it requires is the will to make a difference, and love for the motherland.

After a massively successful campaign in Mumbai in 2018, Blue Pilgrims found themselves in Ahmedabad in the 2019 edition of the Inter Continental Cup. The situation of Indian football at that moment was deplorable at the least- two top leagues with the clubs and their fans in perpetual conflict; an alarmingly high number of established and traditional clubs protesting the federations ridiculous decision to authorize a private body to run and dictate football in the country. The overall mood of the game in the country could be best described as “chaotic”. To top it all off, the city of Ahmedabad was traditionally never a footballing city. The task at hand was huge.
