Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisor Cary Stamp, CFP®, is joined by financial analyst Matt Mellusi, MSFP to chat about how he landed his first opportunity in the field with Cary Stamp & Co.
TRANSCRIPT:
Cary: Hi, I'm Cary Stamp and I'm sitting here today because 32 years ago, a guy who I happen to think was pretty smart made the decision to give me a job. He decided he was going to hire a kid right out of college to become a stockbroker.
Now, it wasn't an easy sell because a lot of people don't want to trust somebody that's particularly young with their life savings. But over the years, I've done this for many men and women, helped them become financial advisors and learn the process and train them over the years.
One of my latest projects is sitting next to me. This is Matt Mellusi. Matt, where are you from?
Matt: Cary, I'm right here in Jupiter, Florida, born and raised.
Cary: Born and raised right here in Jupiter, Florida. And you decided after you went off to college that you were going to come back to Jupiter, Florida, and go into the financial advisory business?
Matt: I did, yes.
Cary: And where did you go to school? I went to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. And you got a Master's degree in what?
Matt: I have a Masters of Science and Financial Planning.
Cary: And in order to get a job, did you have a plan for how you're going to find your first job out of college?
Matt: I did not have a set plan, and that led to looking through many different avenues.
Cary: So how did you find me?
Matt: I went online and I looked for financial advisory firms in the area and I looked at websites and tried to find a firm that I felt like aligned with my values.
Cary: So what did you do?
Matt: Well, I found your firm online, and I reached out via email.
Cary: Via email. Ok that was probably pretty good, but those of us that are older in the industry will probably say we would have been even more impressed with a telephone call because a lot of us old guys have spent our careers pounding the phones to try to drum up business. And a lot of times today people think that they can send a text or email and it conveys the same information. My message to younger people trying to get into the industry is not only do what Matt did, not only have the credentials and the background the Matt has, but have the dedication to the industry and have the chutzpah to make a telephone call to the person that you want to hire.
So Matt, it worked out for you this time, but if you're going to do it over again, make the phone call next time, Matt.
Cary: Sounds good, I will.
Cary: We love to work with younger people and train them in the industry. That doesn't mean we have openings right now, so don't flood my phone lines with requests for employment. But if you're phenomenal, make sure somebody in the industry knows it. I'm Cary Stamp, this is Matt Mellusi and we're at Cary Stamp and Company in Tequesta, Florida.
