The Toyota Prius has evolved remarkably since its debut, setting milestones in hybrid technology and sustainable automotive design. Launched in 1997 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, the Prius introduced a groundbreaking combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor. Initially sold only in Japan, the Prius soon expanded globally, with the second-generation model marking Toyota’s entry into international markets in 2000.

With each generation, the Prius has improved in efficiency, performance, and design. The second generation, introduced in 2003, became a global icon of eco-friendly driving, with a longer body and enhanced fuel efficiency. By 2009, the third-generation Prius added innovative features like selectable driving modes—EV, Eco, and Power—giving drivers greater control over performance and efficiency.

In 2015, the fourth generation introduced a sleeker design and further improvements in aerodynamics and fuel economy, cementing the Prius as a leader in hybrid innovation. For the 2019 model year, the Prius lineup welcomed an all-wheel-drive model featuring Toyota's E-Four system, expanding its versatility.

The fifth-generation Prius was presented on 16 November 2022, with two powertrain options announced for the Japanese market.
