Oars are a forgotten aspect of Naval Warfare. They weren't just relegated to rowboats or the Mediterranean Galley. A galley is a type of sailing craft primarily propelled by oars. It allowed pirates to pursue their targets, and for their targets to escape. If the rigging was damaged by gunfire, the ship could retreat by rowing. This is why even rated warships in the navy, were built to carry oars. Even in the Napoleonic Era.
