What to check on your Porsche Cayman or Boxster 987 if servicing it yourself or thinking of buying one. These are 5 common faults which you may come across and all can be fixed relatively easily. no particular order.
1. Air conditioning not working or getting cold. The AC condensers sit right behind the front grills on the left and right. Due to the large gaps in the grills stones enter easily and they can damage the condensers and cause the system to leak the gas. So the condensers will need replacing

2. Coolant leak from the front coolant hoses. Another common issue, the coolant hoses start leaking. These hoses are exposed to water and road salt and start to corrode over time These hoses join the crossover pipes which links the left and right radiators. common issue here is the aluminium pipes become badly corroded and even removing the hoses can be difficult. common fix is to replace all the front hoses/pipes.

3. AOS Air Oil Separator - this valve removes the oil droplets form the crankcase gasses which are recirculated back into the engine. The effectiveness of the valve starts to erode and oil then passes into the intake and is burned in the engine. If you have a lot of smoke, its likely to be the AOS valve. To check the valve, simply remove the pipe which goes into the plenum chamber and check for evidence of oil. There's likely to be a small amount of misting but any more, then its best to replace the valve.

4. Gear shiftier cables. Two common issues with these and quite difficult to check. The ball joint on the end of the cables. These can become worn and the cable can then pop off. The other issue is the cable snapping. Unfortunately its difficult to see the condition of the cables as its goes off up inside the insulation. You can by kits to prevent the cables popping off but unfortunately its difficult to inspect the cable to see if its on its way out and they typically don't give you any warning before they snap.

5. Driveshaft / CV boot leaking grease. At first you may think its the CV boot leaking grease but in actual fact, its probably the CV joint itself. The casing is pressed together and once it becomes badly corroded, grease can start to leak out. There's not many easy fixes and new driveshafts are required in most circumstances. What you can do, is take action now and repaint the CV joint to avoid any more corrosion setting in.

These are just 5 things wroth checking when looking over the car if you're thinking of buying a 987 It's certainly worth checking if any of these have been fixed or replaced recently. Either way, these are great cars and don't let these put you off buying one :)
