This presentation includes a short review of Elmer solvers for solid mechanics. Thereafter two special subjects are discussed. Firstly, how can users with knowledge of material models extend the stress analysis capabilities of Elmer by adding user-defined UMAT routines. Secondly, how can different models, such as a 2-D shell model and 3-D elasticity equations, be treated simultaneously with Elmer by using a tight numerical coupling.
