Alternative Software is a British software developer and publisher founded in 1985.
From the mid 1980s to the early 1990s, the company published well over a hundred games, primarily for the 8-bit computer formats in the budget (£1.99 to £3.99) market.
Many many many many many thanks to minotaurus, the C64 superhero, he only plays forgotten games :D
As usual, he wrote some notes about this game, let's see:
"Enigma Variation is the same software house that developer, 2 years later, Extreme ( • Extreme - Commodore 64 - longplay ).
In this game we play the role of Fred Macmuscle, the greatest stuntman (at least in the game's universe).
To tell the truth he's the former greatest stuntman, now he's name and his financial situation aren't in good shape, so decides to get back into the action.
The aim of the game is to recover our lost fame and prove that we're still the best.
In other words, Fred Macmuscle to the rescue!
The game is divided into 3 levels, or "films" (actually they seems to be episodes of a tv show called "Ricky Steel"):
Gun Runner from Hell: we are driving a car, armed with missiles. We have to dodge obstacles, mines, bins and other cars that come towards us, in a side-scrolling level with parallax and some clever touches such as the film crew shadow following us.
The level goal is to get to the end collecting 4 missiles, "dropped" by the helicopter in the middle of our crazy race.
If we complete the level without collecting at least 4 missiles it will be game over, since the script requires us to necessarily fulfill this task.
Hellfire Syndrome: here we're piloting an helicopter.
The goal is simply to survive.
In this level we can move left and right and we can change our height (by pressing up and down).
The indicator in the bottom shows us the altitude, which allows us to be able to dodge certain weapons.
If we stay low, we can avoid the anti-aircraft missiles and various planes that come towards us, but we can be shot by boats and cannons.
On the other side, if we are high (on altitude :D), however, we can be hit by anti-aircraft fire (but we can shoot missiles to make our way), dodging every shots coming from the ground
Minute Past Midnight: the last film/level of the game, where we nothing but a gun.
Top view with fixed screens, the goal is to to save all hostages and defuse all bombs on each floor, which little by little is covered with fire.
There are also enemies chasing and shhoting us.
We can carry a maximum of 4 bombs at the same time, so we must also calculate the optimal routes and a collection order, sincet fire makes certain areas inaccessible.
Once all 8 floors have been cleared we have completed this single load game.
We have different "takes" or lives, call them what you want.
By losing a "take", the insurance company tells us that it can or cannot continue to support us, so we have to be careful to avoid doing too much "crap" during our gameplay."

Played by minotaurus and recorded by VED, as part of the videogame endings database, whose goal is to catalogue and create the world's largest archive of videogame endings! (what an humble and not ambitious project :D)
