The below cue card was seen on a recent IELTS exam. The following response was written by a practising IELTS examiner.

Talk about your favourite season. Please say
– What season is this?
– Describe the season.
– Why is this season your favourite?

I know that many people say every season has its charm. In fact, I have friends who have tried to convince me about how wonderful winter is. I’m afraid I cannot agree, however, and I remain very faithful in my love for spring.

In my native country, spring was non-existent. It lasted, perhaps, three weeks before summer suddenly reared its head. Now living in this country, spring is a full season, and it starts late February or early March when the almond trees start to blossom. This is so beautiful to see, especially in areas filled with these trees. The days start getting longer and warmer and every day you can see some new form of life come into being – flowers or trees or even animals, for example. We get to remove all the heavy layers of winter and start wearing lighter fabrics and colours. The streets and cafes are suddenly filled with people and it makes you wonder if everyone was hibernating for the last three months. As spring progresses, the days continue to get warm. The earth is lush and green and talk turns to discussions about summer plans and trips to the beach.

Most importantly though, I see the mood of the people around me get lighter as well. It is as if the arrival of spring fills everyone with a sense of optimism, that the darkness of winter is over and there’s rebirth in the world.

So, I think for me, it is this feeling that spring fills us with that makes it my favourite season. It is a season of optimism, renewal in all senses and its beauty and warmth feel like something of a reward for having endured the dark cold days of winter.
